What are the most common test markers?
Chlamydia
With 129 million new infections worldwide every year [1], Chlamydia is one of the most common STIs, and it may not show any visible symptoms. However, it may cause serious complications like pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, and pregnancy-related issues.
Gonorrhoea
Every year, 82 million people [1] get infected around the world with this bacterial STI that can affect the genitals, rectum, and throat. If not treated, it may cause complications, the most important being pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility.
Syphilis
Around 7.1 million new infections happen every year [1] from this STI caused by the Treponema pallidum bacterium. It may remain asymptomatic for years and it can also cause damage to internal organs.
HIV
HIV is a virus that attacks the immune system, weakening it and leaving the body vulnerable to other infections. With around 39 million people living with it (2022 data) and having claimed already more than 40 million lives globally [1], if left untreated, HIV can become a potentially life-threatening condition.
Trichomoniasis
Most common in females, and often asymptomatic in males, with approximately 156 million new cases in 2020 [1], it’s caused by a protozoan parasite named Trichomonas vaginalis. If not treated, it may elevate the risk of getting other STIs and cause pregnancy complications.
Hepatitis B
The World Health Organization estimates 1.5 million new infections every year [1] from this viral infection that affects the liver potentially leading to cirrhosis and, in severe cases, progression to liver cancer.
Hepatitis C
Globally, around 58 million people live with chronic hepatitis C virus infection [1]. It’s an inflammation of the liver that can lead to lifelong illness including cirrhosis and cancer.
Collection instructions
As a general rule, it's important to observe the following instructions when taking a blood or urine sample:
